Corinthians fans breathed a sigh of relief on Wednesday after centre forward Paolo Guerrero was released from international commitments to play for the Timao in vital matches later this month.

“I’ve been freed (to play),” the No. 9 said the morning after he helped Corinthians beat Atletico-MG 2-0 in the first leg of their Copa do Brasil quarter-final.

Guerrero had been called up by Peru manager Pablo Bengoechea for the internationals against Chile and Guatemala on Oct. 10 and 14. The striker has played more than 50 times for his country, scoring 20 goals.

Guerrero, whose goal in the 2-0 win took him above Ronaldo on Corinthians’ all-time list, is now available for the second leg of that game in Belo Horizonte on Oct. 15 as well as for vital league matches.
