Corinthians lost 1-0 to Bahia at the Fonte Nova Stadium in Salvador on Wednesday night but a 3-0 first leg win meant they still comfortably qualified for the last 16 of the Copa do Brasil with an aggregate score of 3-1.

Corinthians expected the home side to come at them in the opening minutes and they did just that. Bahia needed to get goals to jeopardise the Timao’s place in the next round but they rarely threatened and it was Corinthians who created the first real chance in 12 minutes when Cleber latched on to a loose ball from a corner kick.

The defender’s shot was parried by keeper Marcelo Lomba and it took a timely defensive intervention to stop Gil from causing damage with the rebound.

At the other end, Bahia came close to opening the scoring in 21 minutes but Maxi Biancucchi’s shot was well saved by Cássio.

When the opening goal came it was for the home side and it was a lucky one. A cross came into the box and Guilherme Andrade tried to clear.

However, the midfielder - who had come on to replace Fagner earlier in the match – could only turn the ball into his own net.

Corinthians came out in the second half with Angel Romero in place of Danilo and his presence up front was vital in giving the visitors a more attacking outlook.

But neither Romero nor third substitute Elias, who with his first touch of the ball won possession and set up the Paraguayan only for Lomba to save, were able to score.

Neither, though, could the home side and even though the result on the night was a defeat, classification was comfortably secured.

The draw for the next round will be made in the coming days but Corinthians now shift their attention back to league duty. The Timao face rivals Santos on Sunday at the Vila Belmiro, kick off 4pm.
