Corinthians drew 1-1 with São Paulo this Sunday with the close-fought contest marking a historic landmark for the home side.

When São Paulo failed to score by the 19th minute, it meant Corinthians had gone 660 minutes without conceding a goal, breaking their record previously set in 2001.

The feat was memorable but was one of the few highlights in an otherwise scrappy game at the Arena Barueri.

Both sides almost scored before the break, with Cassio pulling off a great save from Ganso’s long-range shot in the 39th minute and then Rogerio Ceni saving São Paulo two minutes later after Paolo Guerrero and Ralf worked a nice 1-2.

There were goals in the second half and It was Corinthians who opened the scoring just three minutes into the second period. Guerrero and Romarinho exchanged passes on the left and the Peruvian’s low pass into the box was side-footed home by Fágner.

The goal prompted Corinthians to sit back and try and score on the counter attack and Guerrero shot wide after a break in 70 minutes.

However, Sao Paulo were not to be denied an equaliser and in the 80th minute Luis Fabiano made it 1-1.

“I’ll never forget it, my first goal for Corinthians, the team where I started,” Fágner said after the match. “It will be forever in my memory.”

The result leaves Corinthians third in the table with eight points from four games, two behind leader Internacional and one behind second-placed Fluminense. The Timão have the best defence in the league, having lost just one goal.

Next Sunday marks the opening of the Arena Corinthians with the home side playing there for the first time against Figueirense. The match will kick off at 4pm.
