Corinthians returned to action for the second time since the World Cup break on Sunday and they remain unbeaten after Vitoria goalkeeper Wilson pulled off some fine saves to keep the game scoreless and allow both sides a share of the points.

The point at the Barradão stadium in Salvador takes Corinthians to 20 points and keeps them in second place behind the leaders Cruzeiro in this year’s Serie A.

The first half was an uneventful affair with most of the action taking place in a congested midfield. Neither team created many chances and it wasn’t until the 31st minute that Fagner set up Paolo Guerrero with a pass from the right wing but the Peruvian’s show sailed over. Minutes later, goalkeeper Cássio stopped Vitória from breaking the deadlock with a great save.

The second half was not much different with midfields on top. Corinthians manager Mano Menezes sent on Renato Augusto and Romarinho at the break to give the team a more attacking look then added some pace later on with the introduction of Paraguayan striker Angel Romero.

Romero forced Vitória keeper Wilson into a good save after 85 minutes, when he got his head on the end of a Renato Augusto cross and the keeper was on hand again six minutes later to prevent Ralf from stealing the points with a late header.

Corinthians’ next game is at 10pm on Wednesday against Bahia at the Arena Corinthians in the Copa do Brasil. The next league match is the local derby against Palmeiras next Sunday, also at the Arena Corinthians.
