Corinthians hammered Sport 4-1 at the Ilha do Retiro stadium in Recife on Sunday to record their first victory at the northeastern ground since 1998 and at the same time end a winless streak of three matches.

Romarinho and Jadson were the star performers, both grabbing two goals in the victory.

The game started with a scare for Corinthians when goalkeeper Cassio was involved in a clash with Neto Baiano after just 10 minutes. The big keeper hurt his left knee in the incident and was taken off and replaced by Walter.

The fright, though did not have any undue effects on the Timao and they soon took the lead thanks to a nice team move. With 19 minutes gone, Paolo Guerrero beat a defender, laid the ball off to Jadson, who rolled it into the path of Romarinho to smash home from just outside the penalty box.

The man in the No. 31 shirt almost made it two just moments later when he strode forward on the counter attack but his shot went narrowly wide.

Sport got back on level terms in the 27th minute when Leonardo knocked on a cross from Renan Oliveira and Augusto hit the ball home.

But it never stayed that way for long. Ten minutes later Romarinho was felled just outside the box and Jadson’s free kick went in to make it

2-1 after Patric’s deflection wrong footed goalkeeper Magrão.

Sport started the second period strongly and Walter made three good saves in the first six minutes to keep the Timão in front.

And once again, Corinthians showed great resolve to fight back. This time Guerrero did some excellent work on the left only to see his shot well saved by Magrão. However, when Petros went for the rebound he was tripped by Durval and won a penalty that Jadson converted.

Durval was sent off for the foul and with a man extra Corinthians started to dominate the match.

With 68 minutes gone, Romarinho got his second and Corinthians’

fourth. Guerrero beat Ferron and slipped a pass to his teammate to score.

There were no more goals but there was still some action to come. Neto Baiano lost the head in the 71st minute and was sent off after elbowing Cleber.

Two men up and three goals to the good, Corinthians settled for the

4-1 win and played the game out.

The win means Corinthians have 12 points after seven games, four behind leader Cruzeiro. Their next match is on Wednesday night against Cruzeiro at the Canindé stadium in Sao Paulo.
