Corinthians fought hard for long periods of the match but suffered their first away defeat of the season on Sunday when a quick fire double from Argentine striker Barcos gave Grêmio a 2-1 win.

Paolo Guerrero got one back for the Timao but they could not snatch an equaliser against a side led by former Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari. However, Corinthians remain in the top four with 31 points after 17 games.

The visitors attacked from the kick off and had the first chance of the match after two minutes. Guerrero played a 1-2 with Luciano but his weak shot was saved by goalkeeper Marcelo Grohe.

Grohe was also on hand just seconds before half time when Corinthians had their best chance of the opening period. Guerrero spotted Elias in space but Grohe managed to block his shot after he had rounded defender Rhodolfo.

Gremio came out strong at the start of the second period and scored two goals in quick succession. With their first move of the half Zé Roberto whipped in a dangerous cross and the ball fell to Barcos to stab home from close range.

Three minutes later it was 2-0 and again the damage came from a cross into the box. This time Dudu sent the ball into the area and after a goalmouth scramble Barcos was first to seize on the loose ball and make it two.

Corinthians were forced to chase the game and they got a goal back in the 61st minute. Lodeiro hit a fine pass to Guerrero on the left wing and the Peruvian drove into the box and smashed an unstoppable angled shot high into Grohe’s net.

The visitors were buoyed by the goal and created some chances with much of the remaining possession. Luciano and Gil came close with headers and Ralf sent a shot over the bar from way out but a second goal was not forthcoming and Guerrero was sent off in the dying moments to cap an unhappy day for the Timao.

Corinthians next game is against Bragantino on Wednesday in the last 16 of the Copa do Brasil. They will attempt to back on track in the league next Sunday when at home to Fluminense.
